Perhaps Britney should manage England?

November 22, 2007 by David

I came across this great post recently What you can learn about blogging from Britney Spears – even the title is great! Michael Martine makes some interesting observations and I recommend reading – thanks to Chris Garrett for the original link.

What I found most stimulating was that Michaels observations can apply to life in general, not just blogging. For instance “You can’t really care what others say”

Britney is surrounded by people who fawn over her and satisfy her every desire, while in the media she is the subject of endless speculation, gossip, criticism, and the butt of jokes.

I have said in a previous post on popularity, the most criticised people in the world our the Presidents, Prime Ministers and other leading politicians. In fact the above quote probably applies to them as well! [Read more…]

What habits do you want to change?

November 7, 2007 by David

I don’t spend all my time watching TV, I promise, but I’m going to start yet another post with a reference to a particular show. There’s a programme called “Honey, we’re killing the kids” which each week presents a couple with obnoxious children, who live off junk food, take no exercise, etc.

The parents are keen to have help, but the catch of the show is that they present computer generated photographs of what the children will look like in 30 years time. This leads to the parents freaking out and a frantic 3 weeks or so of sudden change in diet and habits – so you can get the new, hopefully improved images of what the children will look like if they sustain these changes.

To be honest the show is of very poor taste – not least because it doesn’t do much for the self confidence or self esteem of the children to be portrayed like this. Also because changes made in this way are unlikely to be sustainable. But it does throw up an interesting idea for us to work on – “what will I be like in X number of years if my current habits don’t change” [Read more…]

We all need to celebrate

November 4, 2007 by David

I enjoy this time of year. The countryside is at its most beautiful, the weather is starting to turn, but its not too cold or wet. And although I don’t actively celebrate either, we’re in the midst of two national “festivals” – Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.

Most countries have days of celebration. Whether linked with religion, national independence, commemorate special people or events, or simply long standing local tradition. Some may be localised in significance, others merit the whole country having a days holiday. Often they can be linked with taking part in certain activities – such as eating or parades/processions that can take weeks of preparation.

Some, like Hallowe’en, are celebrated in different ways across the world and there are different interpretations as to how they originated (Hallowe’en is perceived as a pagan festival of the dead, but has its roots in earlier Christian festivals). Many are quite bizarre! [Read more…]

Overcoming obstacles

September 30, 2007 by David

Although its Sunday lunchtime, when many families gather together, I’m sitting alone in our house as my wife and two younger daughters are all working and our eldest is 275 miles away! I will return to this on Wednesday with a look at habits and routines.

I don’t usually like intrusive noise in my environment, but prefer undistracting music rather than silence. However, at the moment I can hear the television in the room next door which is broadcasting the Great North Run. This is a half marathon road race, where thousands of people rise to the challenge of running 13 miles and usually trying to raise money for worthy causes.

I have touched on challenges like this before, such as my Big Swim, and the Confidence Marathon posts. Important as setting ourselves challenges can be, it nice to be reminded that throughout the world people are having to overcome challenges imposed on them by circumstances of birth and nature. Desiderata

September 23, 2007 by David

One of the delightful things about blogging is how interacting with others running similar sites can be both stimulating and informative. I’ve mentioned before about Priscilla Palmer’s personal development list.

But I was initially irritated when Bob Clubbs posted a comment on my Affirmation Software post (as it wasn’t relevant to what I had written!) – but now I have commited myself to writing a post for his blog. Bob had put up the poem Desiderata by Max Ehrmann, which he said said was close to his personal philosophy on life. He wanted others to volunteer to write about particular sections of the poem that appealed to them. Here is the poem:- [Read more…]
