How Self Conscious are YOU?

April 20, 2008 by David

Do you worry what others think about you? Are you afraid of looking a fool in public – of being a subject of ridicule? How self conscious are you? Would you stay inside rather than go out in scruffy, dirty clothes – or without make up?!

I have written before about how much looking good can help our confidence. If you look the part its easier to act it. But… Allowing our lives be dominated by what others think of us is of course something we should be avoid. However, its very easy to let this slip through – especially when we have established social codes of appearance that we adhere to as well.

I was recently taken with this story about a farmer, Rob Tavener, who practices tai chi in front of his herd of cows. He reckons that as animals are receptive to human moods, so the more relaxed and happy he is, the happier they are. And of course, the happier his cows are, the more milk they produce. [Read more…]

How to Look Confident

March 15, 2008 by David

confident dogDo you look confident? If I spotted you are a social gathering, what would your body language say – “Go away, I don’t want to be here” or “Come and meet me”? I’ve read different statistics, but its fair to say over 70% of our communication is transmitted by our body language.

So how do you change your outer appearance, even if your self talk is still struggling to get over negative thoughts. Here are a few tips to practice:-

Start off with your feet at least 12 inches apart and have your weight even distributed between both feet. Also have your soles of your feet evenly planted on the ground – think of the ball of your foot, the heel and a point just below the little toe as a tripod, supporting the rest of your body. Does your face convey confidence?

January 28, 2008 by David

Does my photograph on the top right of this page give weight and authority to what I write? Or does it put you off, as I look a bit of a wimp? And if you subscribe by RSS you don’t have to look at me at all!

Researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts have come up with an interesting take on faces. Using photographs of top and bottom Chief Executives of Fortune 1000 companies, they got their students to rate them as “powerful” or “warm”. They found:-

“CEO’s who are ranked higher in terms of looking more powerful do better or have more profitable companies than those who are ranked warm.”

So does your face determine your fate, as they suggest? [Read more…]

Do you suffer from gluckschmerz?

January 8, 2008 by David

Thought I’d step away from goals and resolutions and share with you two new words I’ve learned recently. Gluckschmerz, a German word that means feeling unhappy about the good fortune of others; and Schadenfreude – yes, you guessed it – also German, which means feeling pleasure at the suffering of others.

Sadly, the English language doesn’t always have the panache of other languages! We’re left with envy – perhaps the feeling does deserve such a short and ugly word. Does it affect you? If so, does it motivate you to work harder to achieve what the other person has got? Or, does it drag you down and undermine your self confidence?

Professor Richard Smith, University of Kentucky, said envy:-

“Occurs when we lack another’s superior quality, achievement or possession and desire it or wish the other lacked it. When we envy, we feel inferior, longing, resentment and ill-will to the advantaged person.”

Not holding back he goes on to say [Read more…]

Perhaps Britney should manage England?

November 22, 2007 by David

I came across this great post recently What you can learn about blogging from Britney Spears – even the title is great! Michael Martine makes some interesting observations and I recommend reading – thanks to Chris Garrett for the original link.

What I found most stimulating was that Michaels observations can apply to life in general, not just blogging. For instance “You can’t really care what others say”

Britney is surrounded by people who fawn over her and satisfy her every desire, while in the media she is the subject of endless speculation, gossip, criticism, and the butt of jokes.

I have said in a previous post on popularity, the most criticised people in the world our the Presidents, Prime Ministers and other leading politicians. In fact the above quote probably applies to them as well! [Read more…]
