Do you have a dream?

future

I asked Are goals necessary? a few weeks ago, before the current wave of New Year resolutions (which for many are their only attempt at setting goals). Recently Mark McClure came back with an interesting rephrasing of the question – “Are goals necessary but not sufficient?”

My own reflections since writing that post have concluded that goals are necessary, and I have been very poor at using them! Recent research by Professor Richard Wiseman, University of Hertfordshire, looked at techniques people used for succeeding in last years resolutions. He found there were gender differences:-

Men were significantly more likely to succeed when they had been asked to set a goal for themselves: for example, instead of trying to lose weight, say by shedding a pound each week, they were told to focus on a measure of success, such as becoming more attractive to women.

Women were more successful when they [Read more…]

Free Christmas present

December 21, 2007 by David

This is a quick post to let you know of a brilliant free gift – that someone else is giving away! I came across Thea Westra and her Forward Steps site through Personal Development Partners. Thea has created a great resource with Forward Steps and has put together a special Advent Calendar for Christmas. This has links to 24 videos by inspirational, motivational and creative speakers on various aspects of personal development.

The videos last from about 4 minutes to over 20 in length. Some speakers are well know (Tony Robbins, Steve Jobs, Jim Rohn), others I had never heard of. To date I have seen nine and they have all been excellent. As its linked to Christmas I’m not sure if the page will stay up indefinitely, so get your Advent Calendar now. Incidentally, each “day” has links to other gifts that Thea has put together. Makes me feel a real Scrooge!

Someone else who I have to admire for working really hard this Christmas on creating a new project is Mert Ekral. On his Search for Blogging blog he is creating a “Bloghology” – more of which in the New Year. But for this he has interview me, which now appears on Peopleized! So not exactly a Christmas present, but taste of something to come.

Build a self confidence portfolio

December 11, 2007 by David

I’ve written a lot recently about thinking and self talk, in particular how we tend to automatically focus on negatives. This applies just as easily to confidence. If asked, most of us can list things we cannot do, areas we lack confidence without too much searching.

So lets start at the opposite end. How often do you remind yourself of what you are good at, or remind yourself of times when you felt totally confident? What we think about has a direct bearing on how we feel, our emotional state. And, yes its that habit word again. Getting in the habit of feeling confident is one simple way of raising your general expectation of yourself. [Read more…]

Do you believe in fairies?

November 18, 2007 by David

minstead1Let me tell you a bit about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. He was born in Scotland in 1859 and he studied to be a doctor at Edinburgh University. Medicine took him to the Arctic Circle (on a whaling ship) and Africa before he established a practice on the English south coast.

His first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, became widely read worldwide before he was 30. Throughout his life, Conan Doyle saw the “Holmes” stories as commercial and wished to be regarded as a serious author by his other work (plays, historic novels and poetry – Sherlock Holmes initially gained huge readership in a popular magazine).

A man of principle and courage, whatever his own reservations regarding his creation of Sherlock Holmes, his knighthood and other awards made him one of the most influential and respected men of his generation. But he was not without controversy. He held strong beliefs in the occult and in particular he expounded spiritualism, being able to communicate with the dead. [Read more…]

If you don’t make changes…

November 11, 2007 by David

In what habits do you want to change, I started getting you to think about what aspects of your life will be like in the future – if you don’t change anything. You can look at the whole you, but I find it simpler to take one aspect of “you” – be it work, leisure, relationships, wealth.

Einstein once said:-

“The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things over and over again and expect a different result.”

If you want aspects of your life to improve, something has to change. The reason to start comparing now and the future is to identify exactly what that change needs to be. [Read more…]
