Build Self Confidence by Being Lucky?

August 30, 2009 by David

A post about the Law of Attraction and Luck? Are they prerequisites for self confidence? No, but they both centre on beliefs and how we see the world, which have a huge bearing on self confidence.

Law of Attraction – Total Twaddle?

Any follower of this blog would soon notice that one of my pet dislikes is the Law of Attraction.  Not so much for what it is, but the way it is promoted as if there really is a "Law".  In "Do you believe in fairies?" I used the story of Arthur Conan Doyle, and his unshakable belief in the existence of fairies, as a comparison.

The biggest argument I have, is with those who believe that by thinking something, you can externally influence events and "make things happen".  The most used example is being able to conjure up parking spaces by just imagining that empty space. [Read more…]

The Secret to Self Confidence is Ancient

November 16, 2008 by David

I have a basic principle of not promoting anything I haven't purchased and used myself. This is a review of an ebook I purchased, but then got my money back on!:-

Secrets to Self Confidence

I recently purchased this ebook as the sales page promised much:-

Each day, you will have a short but profound paragraph to read and consider, a simple exercise to complete and a memory verse to memorize. That’s it, follow this plan and with just minutes of effort a day, you will develop a strong magnetic, self-confident personality in no time at all.

However  Secrets to Self Confidence suffers a quite few drawbacks. its quite evident that the book was written some time ago – there is no clue as to whom the author James Stephenson is, but there is a preface dated 1910!  This is the start of Chapter 3 (The Cure of Self-Consciousness) :-

The student should aim here to develop definiteness of idea, sincerity of expression, and concentration of mind. Nothing leads so quickly to hesitation and embarrassment in a speaker as mental uncertainty. To speak confidently, he must not guess, or imagine, or take for granted, he must know. Lack of proper mental equipment is responsible for a large part of the fearfulness of men. One who really knows whereof he speaks, and is absolutely sure of it, is likely to be sure of himself. It manifests itself in his voice, his use of words, his manner, and his entire personality.

On the same page he goes on to quote Newman's "definition of a gentleman"! I don't know who Newman was, but like many other quotes used, it dates the text horribly. [Read more…]

Great Self Confidence – the basics

October 21, 2007 by David

Sometimes we come across something that suddenly gives us the answer to several problems that had got the better of us. This morning I sat down to read “Karate in the Realm of Personal Development” by Priscilla Palmer. As a “premium” member of Personal Development Partners I had been able to download this for free, although it is relatively inexpensive via Priscilla’s site.

The first chapter on Confidence came up with some excellent points. The initial definition that confidence:-

“essentially narrows down to what we think and feel in regards to our self. These thoughts and feelings will determine our lives.”

As I was suggesting a week ago in confidence at work, when we are confident in our abilities, we become confident in ourselves. [Read more…]

Affirmation software

September 12, 2007 by David

Following on from my post on affirmations, there is no denying that for most people the act of reciting positive affirmations is quite strange. Like with other forms of goal setting, you write them out with the best of intention  but never get around to looking at them on a regular basis. More importantly, affirmations have to be read with emotion and made to feel real  otherwise your subconscious mind will not take them on as reality.

In the past I have tried computer software and subliminal CDs to help this process and tried to make my own affirmation board  a combination of affirmation statements and pictures/photographs. Despite my interest in photography, this never properly got off the ground. But over the past 3 months I have been trying a new piece of software called “Vision Board”. This helps you create an active screensaver, which is a combination of photographs and affirmations. [Read more…]
